Why injury? It's this simple: more children die from injuries every year than from the next three leading causes of death combined. Nobody knows this because no one is talking about it. In the U.S., one child dies every hour from an injury that could have been prevented. Around the world, a child dies every 30 seconds as the result of an injury. You don’t need to have a child to know that we can do better.

We here at End Injury understand the importance of play in kids’ lives. We know that kids need to test their limits and try out new skills, but we also want to ensure that they can get back up again when they fall. This week’s Operation End Injury action focuses on your neighborhood playgrounds, but what if your children don’t have access to a safe place to play? Maybe equipment is out-of-date, maybe the surfacing doesn’t protect kids if they fall, or maybe there is no playground in your neighborhood at all. Fortunately, there are people and organizations whose mission is to help kids find safe places to play. This week, End Injury is giving a Round of Applause to one of these organizations, KaBOOM!.

Here’s KaBOOM’s mission in its own words:

KaBOOM! has helped communities build, open, and update more than 16,300 playgrounds since 1996. As child advocates, we love that KaBOOM! follows strong safety guidelines and offers ideas for activities for kids of all sizes and abilities (including those with special needs). With resources covering everything from fundraising, community support, and technical issues like installing equipment and site selection, KaBOOM! has given millions of children the chance to let loose, have fun, and just be kids, all in a safe environment.

We truly believe that every child deserves a safe place to grow, learn, and play. As Fred Rogers once said, “Play is really the work of childhood.” Here’s your Round of Applause, KaBOOM!, for helping so many children enjoy the work of childhood.
