Why injury? It's this simple: more children die from injuries every year than from the next three leading causes of death combined. Nobody knows this because no one is talking about it. In the U.S., one child dies every hour from an injury that could have been prevented. Around the world, a child dies every 30 seconds as the result of an injury. You don’t need to have a child to know that we can do better.

Round of Applause: New Jersey Teen Drivers (and Their Parents)

End Injury

This Round of Applause is dedicated to New Jersey teen drivers and their parents. A recent report estimates that at least in New Jersey, teen drivers were following the graduated driver licensing (GDL) law more than 90% of the time.

GDL is designed to address some of the factors involved with teen driver safety, such as putting limits on driving hours, number of passengers, and use of electronic devices. But for the laws to work, teen drivers have to follow them.

While the number of teen involved crashes in the U.S. has gone down in the last decade, motor vehicle crashes are still the leading cause of death in most areas of the United States for teens ages 15-19 so there is more work to be done.

So, here’s a Round of Applause for you, New Jersey teen drivers and their parents, for following your state’s GDL laws. Your dedication is saving lives.

Not sure about your state's GDL law? The Governors Highway Safety Association has a complete list.
