Why injury? It's this simple: more children die from injuries every year than from the next three leading causes of death combined. Nobody knows this because no one is talking about it. In the U.S., one child dies every hour from an injury that could have been prevented. Around the world, a child dies every 30 seconds as the result of an injury. You don’t need to have a child to know that we can do better.

Round of Applause: USA Swimming Foundation

End Injury

School’s out, and Memorial Day has come and gone. With summer officially just around the corner, End Injury is giving a Round of Applause to the USA Swimming Foundation, a non-profit philanthropic organization that supports Team USA athletes and prevents drowning through learn-to-swim initiatives.

Drowning is a serious issue—it’s the leading cause of death for children ages 1-4 years and stays in the top 10 causes of injury-related death until age 55. Healthychildren.org notes that toddlers are more likely to drown in pools while older children and teens tend to drown in natural water like rivers and lakes.

USA Swimming Foundation has taken on this problem with its Make a Splash program, which provides funding for free or low-cost swimming lessons to more than 4 million children across the country. Many children live in areas where swimming lessons are hard to access, whether from cost or availability, so USA Swimming works with more than 750 qualified swimming instructors to teach water safety and raise awareness about drowning. And who better to teach our young swimmers than Olympic athletes, who frequently jump in the pool to encourage kids to enjoy the water safely.

So here’s your Round of Applause, USA Swimming Foundation, for leading the charge against drowning. Due to your efforts, four million children and counting have a better shot at growing up safely.
